Grade K-3 Diversity Read-Aloud Collection
Looking for “read-alouds” that promote understanding and empathy across racial and cultural divides? Books that celebrate our differences? Then check out SongLake Books’ newest K-3 Diversity Read-Aloud Collection.
All students deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read. This promotes a feeling of self-worth and respectability. All students also deserve to see those other than themselves in the books they read. This leads to empathy and compassion for others. (See Rudine Sims Bishop’s Windows and Mirrors)
Until now the focus of SongLake Books has been promoting diverse guided reading and diverse independent reading materials. Now our focus has broadened to include “read-alouds”. The teacher is arguably the most influential person in students’ lives. By choosing read-aloud books that spotlight a variety of races, cultures, ethnicities, the other abled, all diversity in its broadest sense, teachers can be a powerful agent for change. School districts often dictate which materials are used for reading instruction. However, the teacher has greater flexibility in choosing which books to “read aloud” to the class. You can promote empathy, compassion, and civility for those unlike ourselves by choosing wisely.
Our SongLake Books’ K-3 Diversity Read-Aloud Collection is affordably designed to be shared within and/or across grade levels. As with each of our collections, books are collated from a variety of publishers. We have selected twenty powerful K-3 “read-aloud” titles whose characters spotlight the wide diversity our country represents. Open your students’ eyes to the array, value, and wonderment our differences hold. SongLake Books can help!
